How to Start a Career in Data Analytics With No Prior Experience

A lot of the people who come to us have never worked with data before. They might be in retail, admin, teaching, or customer service, and they've heard that data analytics is a good career move but have no idea how to get started. The honest answer is that it is a great career move, and getting started is more straightforward than most people expect.

Why are so many poeople making the switch to data?

Demand for data skills has grown significantly over the past few years and shows no sign of slowing down. Businesses of all sizes, across pretty much every sector, need people who can make sense of the information they're collecting. The problem is there aren't enough people with those skills, which means employers are actively recruiting and are often willing to take on people who are newer to the field.

We've had students come through our bootcamp from all sorts of backgrounds and go on to secure data roles within a few months of finishing. Former teachers, marketing assistants, warehouse supervisors, and customer service managers have all made the transition. What they had in common wasn't a technical background. It was curiosity and a willingness to put the work in.

What skills do you actually need to get started?

You don't need to know anything before you begin. The tools you'll use as a junior data analyst are learnable by anyone, and the best training programmes teach them from scratch.

The main ones are SQL, which is used to pull and query data from databases, Tableau for building charts and dashboards that make data easier to understand, and Google Sheets for day-to-day data work. Beyond the tools, employers are looking for people who can think logically, communicate clearly, and ask good questions of a dataset. Those are skills many people bring from completely unrelated careers.

How do we approach training at The Curious Academy?

Our data analytics Skills Bootcamp runs over 12 weeks and is taught in person at our academy in Reading. We start from the very beginning, assuming no technical knowledge whatsoever, and build skills week by week through hands-on projects and real datasets.

Our instructors aren't academics. They work in data and bring that real-world experience into every session. That matters because they know what actually comes up in a data job, what employers pay attention to in interviews, and what a good portfolio looks like.

Why do we teach in person?

We made a deliberate decision to teach face to face rather than online, and it comes down to outcomes. Students who attend a structured programme twice a week, work alongside other learners, and can ask an expert directly when they get stuck progress far more quickly than those working through videos on their own.

Our class sizes are small so nobody gets lost. If something isn't clicking, we work through it together. That level of support is hard to replicate in an online environment, and we think it makes a real difference to how people feel about learning something new.

Is the training actually fully funded?

For eligible individuals, yes, the course is completely free. It's funded through the Government's Lifetime Skills Guarantee, which exists to help adults build new skills and improve their job prospects. Most adults aged 19 and over qualify, regardless of whether they're employed or not.

There are no fees to pay upfront or later. The funding comes from the Department for Education and we handle all of the admin. What we ask for in return is commitment to attend the sessions and see the programme through.

What happens when you finish?

We don't just hand over a certificate and wish you luck. Career support is built into the programme from start to finish. We help students put together a portfolio of real data projects, work on their CVs, and prepare for interviews. We also have good relationships with employers across Berkshire who are recruiting data talent.

One of the features of the Skills Bootcamp framework is that graduates are guaranteed an interview with a local employer on completion. That guaranteed interview has been the starting point for a lot of the success stories we've seen.
